Venice Biennale 2008

CGA went in November 2008 to the 11th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice.

As always the Biennale is a huge event, divides between the spaces of the Arsenale, I Giardini and smaller exhibition spaces around the city. In no particular order, we we were impressed by:

Intuition- reflection and construction. Sverre Fehn. An exhibition on the work of the 84 years old Norwegian master. Drawings, models and sketches often centred on the dialogue between building and nature.

"Ungapatchket", by Frank Gehry a 1/25 of the hotel project in Moscow under design for russiansenator Sergei Gordeev. Clay on supporting egg-crate frame and 300mm x 300mm timber framework.

Out Here: Disquieted Architecture by Angelo De Sousa and Eduardo Souto De Moura. A play of mirrors inside and outside Fondaco Marcello.

Singletown by Droog and Kesselskramer. An abstract interpretation of a new kind of urban space, focused on the world of contemporary singles (predicting that a third of people in developed countries will be living alone by 2026).

A housing system designed by Cucinella: “an home for 100k euoro”. Low impact, low costing housing based on green architecture solutions and a variety of lifestyles.

The greenhouses at the Japanese pavilionby Junya Ishigami. Slender glass and steel construction on the exterior and delicate pencil drawings on the interior.

Paolo Portoghesi on the theme of Roma, the Interrupted City as defined by Piero Sartogo in 1978. An inspiring comparison of natural and built forms, studied and presented through different mediums (drawings, photographs and wooden models)

An housing project for the new development of Diagonal Mar in Barcelona by Lluis Clotet and Ignacio Paricio, displayed at the Spanish Pavillion, Giardini.

Gustafson, Porter Ltd. landscape architects created a secret garden called Towards Paradise.

Among the never-ending secrets of Venice: a landed submarine!
