Salone del Mobile 2007

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is the European most revered furniture and design show: over 2,500 exhibitors from nearly 40 different countries and 200,000 m2 of exhibition space.

This year Crawford and Gray Architects visited the Salone. From 19 to 22 April, we investigated new trends and looked for products and materials.

Given the abundance of interesting images and references, we decided to prepare 7 different posts. The first is based on 10 snapshots of memorable moments between the New Exhibition Hall (La Fiera) and the Design Areas in centre of town (Fuori Salone): opening, parties, street life, ...

Thursday Night: opening party at the Pelota Building for Established and Sons, the British design company founded by Alasdhair Willis

Friday: The Fiera! The new exhibition space of the Milan Fair, located in Rho, outside Milan. The huge and stunning system of buildings and connecting spaces was designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and opened in 20005.

Faced with 24 pavillions, we tried to be very selective....

Friday Evening: they say that 300 thousand people visit the Salone. In area of Via Tortona the design crowd takes over the street. The soundtrack is offered by DJs playing in the street

Friday Night: opening party at Your personal Space

Friday Night: for their opening, the Belgian radiator manufacturer Jaga casted in chocolate one of their radiators... and then broke it to pieces. Delicius!

Friday Night: at the Superstudio in Via Tortona, design and music

Saturday evening: Castello Sforzesco, the medieval hart of Milan is transformed in a public open air communal drawing room. Sofas, armchair, bookcases, books, digital fireplaces and lamps are all offered to the people to use. The best of the Salone!

Sunday morning: quick morning coffee at Oro, the recently opened Bar Restaurant of Dolce & Gabbana

Sunday, late morning: more design at the Triennale. The garden are buzzing with people having brunch.

Sunday, lunch time: the combination of design, good food and sophisticated places seems to be the strong point of the Salone.
